BURR RIDGE, Ill. (AP) — A man fatally shot a co-worker and wounded another at a suburban Chicago office building before he took his own life as officers were closing in on him, police said.

Burr Ridge Police Chief John Madden said officers were called about 3 p.m. Tuesday to an office building after a gunman fatally shot a man and wounded a woman who were his co-workers.

The gunman was being fired or laid off from his job and the man who was killed was his supervisor, Burr Ridge Village President Gary Grasso told The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald.

Grasso said the wounded woman was taken to a hospital in Downers Grove, where she underwent surgery for a leg wound.

After the shooting, the gunman fled the scene on foot in the southwest Chicago suburb. He was eventually located about a mile and a half to two miles away and officers set up a perimeter, Madden said.

“When officers closed in on him, he took his own life by gunshot. He is deceased,” he said.
